15-25 year olds invited to join 2024 Tall Ships Races sailing training

This summer, Tallinn will host the international Tall Ships Races 2024 for the first time, offering 15-25 year-olds the chance to participate in a sailing training program. The city will cover training costs up to €700 per participant, with applications open until February 11, 2024.

More information and application details can be found HERE.

Deputy Mayor Tiit Terik emphasizes the program as a prime opportunity for young people to partake in a grand adventure and gain sailing experience in an international team. “The Tall Ships Races 2024 sailing program opens the doors to the sea for young sailing enthusiasts, where they can not only learn sailing but also experience different cultures and forge global connections. It's a unique opportunity to broaden horizons and gain valuable knowledge under the guidance of a professional crew,” describes Terik.

Young residents of Tallinn, aged 15–25 years (inclusive) as per the population registry, can apply for sailing training support during The Tall Ships Races (June 29 – August 5).

The training is available on a sail training ship for one leg of the regatta:

  • June 29 – July 6, 2024, from Klaipeda to Helsinki

  • July 6 – 13, 2024, from Helsinki to Tallinn

  • July 13 – 20, 2024, from Tallinn to Turku

  • July 20 – 26, 2024, from Turku to Mariehamn

  • July 26 – August 4, 2024, from Mariehamn to Szczecin

The training is conducted on ships participating in the international regatta The Tall Ships Races 2024. The fleet typically comprises large historic sailing ships and modern ocean yachts. At least half of each ship’s crew are young people aged 15–25 from various countries, some experiencing their first sea voyage.

Each training ship has a professional and experienced crew ensuring the safety and effective delivery of the program for young sailors.

Tallinn covers training expenses up to 700 euros per participant and provides places on the ships. Participants must cover a fee of 300 euros and their travel Insurance.

Information days about the sailing training regatta will be held on January 8 at 6:00 PM at Valdeku Youth Center, January 9 at 5:30 PM at the City Centre Youth Center, and January 12 at 4:00 PM at the Mustamäe Youth Center.

The Tall Ships Races is an international training regatta with a long-standing tradition, aiming to engage and educate young people and draw attention to the current state of the marine ecosystem and sustainability.

The regatta is organized by the international sailing training association, Sail Training International. In July 2024, the ports of Tallinn will host the fleet of The Tall Ships Races.
